As managing director with New Dimension Group, Nicholas Janitsary guides a firm that offers counterterrorism consulting and training services and has offices in Dubai, Singapore, and Delhi. Nicholas Janitsary stays current on latest trends in security and has followed the Senate Armed Services Committee’s (SASC) recent reform proposals related to processes and organizations within the US national security framework.
As reported by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, it has been three decades since a major restructuring took place. SASC chairman Senator John McCain has expedited the process, as he sees value in initiating reforms prior to uncertain changes in US political leadership.
Major proposed changes include placing limits on the National Security Council to 150, as the organization has expanded from 50 members to 400 over the past decade. It has transitioned from providing policy coordination to acting as an independent agency, and been accused of micromanagement beyond its original mandate.
In addition, the proposed SASC reforms will clarify the way combatant commands (COCOMs) are organized and will better define the way in which chairman of the Joint Chiefs can deploy forces across COCOMs. The role of COCOMs will be narrowed to national defense strategic activities. This change is a result of a situation in which they have become involved in a variety of non-war-fighting functions in recent years.
